Where Is The Clutch On A Motorcycle?

Where Is The Clutch On A Motorcycle

In this article we will take a look at where the clutch controls are located on a motorcycle. You will find that the vast majority of motorcycles will have these controls in the same location.

Where is the clutch on a motorcycle is a common question as most people are used to a manual (or stick shift) car setup where the clutch is operated by pressing on a foot pedal, so you can understand their confusion when they first get their motorbike license and are confused. On a motorcycle you will find that all of the controls are set out much differently.

The photo below is of the left hand handgrip of a common motorcycle. The clutch is the metal lever.

The clutch is operated by squeezing the lever fully inward to engage the clutch. To release the clutch you simply slowly release the lever and it will go back to the original positioning.

How To Change Gears On A Motorcycle:

  1. Squeeze in the clutch lever until it can’t be squeezed any further.
  2. Use the gear changing lever (operated by your left foot) to change the gear. This works in a similar fashion to how a gear stick would in a car, however the gears are set out different on a motorcycle, where they are ordered 1st gear >> Neutral gear >> 2nd gear >> 3rd gear >> 4th gear >> 5th gear >> 6th gear.
  3. Try and match the revs of the engine with the gear speed by using the throttle
  4. Slowly begin letting the clutch lever out
  5. You will feel the gear begin to grip and you are in your new desired gear.
