Motorbike License Requirements – Australian Capital Territory (ACT)

Motorbike license requirements in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) follow these steps:

 Learner Motorbike License:

You must be at least 16 years and 9 months old to obtain a Learner Motorbike License in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT).

If you do not already have a car driver’s license then you will also be required to complete a Road Ready Learner License Course, which includes a computerized knowledge test on ACT road rules. You may complete this test through your school.

Once you have your car driver’s license you will be required to complete a government approved rider training course. The courses are run by “Stay Upright” which are a combination of motorbike practical and motorbike theory tests. Once you have completed the Stay Upright course they will issue you with a training completion certificate. Contact details for Stay Upright can be found in the resources section at the bottom of this page.

Bring the certificate along with your driver’s license to Canberra Connect in order for the motorbike learner license accreditations to be added to your license.

A Learner Motorbike License in the Australian Capital Territory is valid for 2 years.

Like other states within Australia, you will be limited to the type of motorbike that you can ride on your Learner Motorbike License.

Provisional and Open Motorbike Licenses:

You must be 17 years old and have held your Learner Motorbike License for at least 3 months before you can obtain your Provisional Motorbike License within the Australian Capital Territory (ACT).

To book your Provisional Motorbike License course with Stay Upright you must contact Stay Upright. Contact details for Stay Upright can be found in the resources section at the bottom of this page.
